The most useful result is often a recording of the heart rhythm while the patient is actually experiencing palpitations. If symptoms occur during a normal rhythm, that information can be reassuring and may direct attention toward non-arrhythmic causes. If an abnormal rhythm is captured, the type, duration, rate, and relationship to symptoms help guide treatment.

Occasional premature beats may be common and do not always require treatment, particularly when the heart is otherwise structurally normal. Atrial fibrillation, sustained supraventricular tachycardia, significant bradycardia, or more serious ventricular arrhythmias require a different approach.

An abnormal rhythm does not automatically mean a procedure is necessary. Some patients need reassurance and trigger reduction, some require medicines, and others may benefit from electrophysiology evaluation, catheter ablation, anticoagulation, pacemaker therapy, or another treatment depending on the diagnosis.

Can Lifestyle Triggers Be Reduced?

When serious cardiac causes have been excluded, reducing common triggers may improve symptoms. Excessive caffeine, energy drinks, nicotine, dehydration, poor sleep, and stimulant-containing medicines can worsen palpitations in some people. Stress and anxiety can also increase awareness of the heartbeat.
